Clariant expands production capacity for halogen-free flame retardants in Daya Bay
Clariant has completed the expansion of its production site in Daya Bay, China. The investment of approximately EUR 107 million strengthens the company’s capacity for halogen-free flame retardants and supports the development of new Exolit OP solutions for electromobility applications.
Clariant has completed construction of a second production line for halogen-free flame retardants at its Daya Bay facility. The line will start full operations in November 2025. The expansion addresses the growing demand for sustainable flame retardant solutions in Asia and global markets. A key focus is electromobility, where flame-retarded plastics are increasingly used in battery housings, connectors and casings—often in combination with coatings and protective finishes.
New Exolit OP products for PBT applications
Alongside the capacity expansion, Clariant introduced two new products in its Exolit OP portfolio: Exolit OP 1242 (TP) and Exolit OP 1266 (TP), both developed for polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) applications. The products will be presented at K 2025.
Exolit OP 1242 (TP) provides high hydrolysis stability, while Exolit OP 1266 (TP) maintains a consistent comparative tracking index (CTI) of 600 V even after extended storage. Both meet the UL 94 vertical burn test with a V-0 classification at sample thicknesses of 0.4 mm and dosage levels of 15–20 %.
Relevance for the coatings industry
Halogen-free flame retardants such as the Exolit OP range are increasingly relevant for coatings formulations. They enable environmentally compatible and low-emission coating systems used in electronics housings, transportation components, and e-mobility applications. The capacity expansion in Daya Bay enhances global supply reliability and supports the development of safer, more durable, and sustainable coating materials.
