A new thermochromic coating that visualises temperature changes through a three-stage colour transition has been developed by a Chinese research team. The coating integrates thermochromic microcapsules (TCMs) with nano-silica (SiO₂), fabricated using a simple spray coating method. The colour transitions from green to yellow to red cover a temperature range of 15–35 °C, closely aligning with human thermal perception.

The coating exhibits exceptional water-repellent properties, with a water contact angle (WCA) exceeding 150° and a sliding angle below 3°. After mild abrasion, the WCA increases to over 160°, highlighting its outstanding abrasion resistance. Beyond mechanical stability, the coating demonstrates durability under UV exposure, chemical corrosion, and mechanical impact, making it suitable for long-term applications.
