Innovative nanocontainers enhance corrosion resistance in epoxy coatings
A novel composite epoxy coating featuring magnetic and pH-responsive nanocontainers demonstrates superior corrosion protection and self-healing properties, paving the way for advanced anticorrosion technologies.
Researchers have developed an advanced composite epoxy coating incorporating dual-responsive Fe₃O₄@BTA-ZIF-8 nanocontainers to address corrosion challenges in steel protection. This innovative nanotechnology combines magnetic field-directed distribution with pH-triggered inhibitor release, improving both corrosion resistance and self-healing performance in waterborne formulations.
The nanocontainers were synthesised via in-situ growth of benzotriazole (BTA)-encapsulated zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8) on anion-modified Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles. This design allows the nanocontainers to migrate towards the metal interface under an external magnetic field, increasing the local concentration of the corrosion inhibitor. Furthermore, under corrosive conditions, the pH-responsive mechanism ensures controlled BTA release, facilitating rapid sealing of micro-cracks and enhancing protective properties.
Reading tip: Corrosion protection coatings
The book Anticorrosive Coatings: Fundamentals and New Concepts brings together all the disciplines involved in the creation and use of corrosion protection coatings for metals. It presents the latest insights into the quality and chemistry of surfaces, the proper way to prepare them by conversion treatment, the function of resins and anticorrosion pigments in paints, and novel concepts in corrosion protection. As an added bonus, all the standards and directives mentioned in the text are grouped together in their own chapter for a better overview.
Enhanced Self-Healing and Corrosion Resistance
Tests on carbon steel revealed striking results: the nanocontainers achieved an inhibition efficiency of 82.40 % after 24 hours of saline immersion. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy data showcased a |Z|0.01 Hz value exceeding 1.42 × 10¹⁰ Ω·cm² after 35 days, demonstrating an over tenfold improvement compared to coatings without magnetic modulation. Self-healing properties were also significantly enhanced, with a scratched coating showing an improvement efficiency of 165.04 % after only six hours of immersion.
The study is the first to utilise magnetic MOF-based nanomaterials for corrosion protection, highlighting their potential in creating high-performance waterborne epoxy coatings. This pioneering approach also aligns with the industry’s growing focus on sustainable, multifunctional coatings.
