The specialty chemicals company Nouryon has completed a capacity expansion for metal alkyls production at its Jiaxing site in China. This investment doubles the company’s capacity for triethylaluminum, an essential co-catalyst in the production of polyethylene and polypropylene, which are used in packaging, automotive components and consumer goods.

Starting in 2027, Nouryon will also begin producing modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO) in China – a key component in catalysts for polyolefin elastomers, which are increasingly used in solar applications. In addition, the company plans to open an innovation center for organic peroxides in Tianjin in 2026. Equipped with advanced application technology, the center will accelerate product development and enhance customer support.

“Our investments in China underline our commitment to offering forward-looking polymer specialties solutions through local production and innovation,” said Larry Ryan, President of Nouryon. “By combining our global expertise in polymer catalysts with the specific needs of the local market, we are improving supply reliability, fostering innovation and supporting our customers’ growth.”

Research and development for efficient processes

The Jiaxing expansion also includes technical upgrades, such as a state-of-the-art thermal oxidizer emission control system and new blending and cylinder transfilling capabilities. The site is gaining further strategic importance: in 2024, an R&D laboratory was established there, focusing on process efficiency and new production methods for metal alkyls. It plays a key role in advancing polyolefin innovation and supporting regulatory alignment in China.

These current projects are part of the Performance Materials segment within Nouryon’s Polymer Specialties business unit. Nouryon’s solutions support applications throughout the entire polymer lifecycle – from production and modification to recycling – contributing to lighter, more durable and more efficient products.
