Evonik enhances UV label and release liner coating capabilities in Shanghai
Evonik has upgraded its UV-curable coating equipment in Shanghai to include an advanced 5-roll coating system, improving simulation of industrial production conditions. The move supports energy-efficient LED curing and enhances collaboration with customers in the label and release liner sector.
Evonik has announced a significant upgrade to its UV-curable coating equipment at the Shanghai Innovation Park, introducing a 5-roll coating system designed to better simulate modern industrial production conditions. This advancement in laboratory technology allows for more precise testing, improved formulation optimisation, and smoother scaling from lab development to commercial production. The upgrade aims to enhance Evonik’s collaboration with customers in the label and release liner sector.
According to Jared Bender, Head of Product Line Agriculture & Specialties at Evonik Interface & Polyurethane Additives, the investment reflects the company’s focus on customer-centric innovation. “This advancement allows us to better support customer-specific projects, from early-stage feasibility studies to full production validation,” Bender said.
Focus on sustainable LED curing technologies
The upgraded system incorporates a state-of-the-art UV/LED inert curing unit, enabling seamless switching between UV and LED curing modes. LED curing is increasingly adopted by the industry due to its lower energy consumption, reduced emissions, and improved operational efficiency compared to conventional systems.
Hang Xu, Head of Evonik Interface & Polyurethane Additives in Asia Pacific, emphasised the importance of this development for regional collaboration. “With the enhanced capabilities in Shanghai, we are strengthening our ability to respond quickly to local market needs, while collaborating with our global teams for further advancements in efficient and sustainable release coating technologies,” Xu remarked.
Decades of innovation in UV-curable release coatings
Evonik has been a leader in UV-curable release coatings for over 40 years. Since the introduction of its free-radical “TEGO® RC” silicones in 1985, the company has advanced release liner performance and supported high-efficiency converting processes. The Shanghai facility upgrade complements a global innovation network that includes pilot lines and laboratories in Essen (Germany) and Richmond (USA).
Through these facilities, Evonik leverages global expertise while maintaining close proximity to local customers. The company remains committed to delivering tailored solutions and driving sustainable innovation in the coatings industry.
