EuPIA launches new charter for raw material selection in printing inks
The European Printing Ink Association (EuPIA) has introduced its “Charter on Raw Material Selection and Exclusion for Printing Inks and Related Products”, prioritising worker safety and sustainable substitution of hazardous substances.
The European Printing Ink Association (EuPIA) has launched a “Charter on Raw Material Selection and Exclusion for Printing Inks and Related Products”, replacing its former exclusion policy. This voluntary initiative strengthens chemical safety measures in the European ink and printing industry, complementing existing EU regulations like CLP and REACH.
A key aspect of the charter is mandatory substitution of non-threshold substances – chemicals without defined safe exposure levels – within one year. For threshold substances, use is permitted if substitution is unfeasible and risk assessments confirm safe applications. Biennial reviews will ensure compliance with evolving safety standards.
Strengthening industry safety
The charter applies to all types of printing inks and related products across Europe, aiming to enhance worker and consumer safety. EuPIA emphasises that substances classified under the previous exclusion policy are considered substituted and will not be re-evaluated.
