Siegwerk, a manufacturer of printing inks and coatings for packaging applications, is driving forward its expansion in the USA and Canada. With targeted investments at its sites in Des Moines, Iowa, and Morganton, North Carolina, the company is strengthening its production capacity and technological expertise in order to meet the growing demands of the North American market. The measures are part of the global Formula 2030 strategy, which aims to achieve sustainable business models and efficient regional production networks.

Several projects are currently being carried out at the Des Moines site, including the modernisation of the grinding and mixing plants as well as the introduction of new production systems for inline batches. These systems are intended to increase operational flexibility while at the same time improving responsiveness to customer requirements. In addition, the foundation stone for a new warehouse building was laid in June, creating additional capacity for solvent-based production. Jarred Carter, Head of Business Unit Flexible Packaging CUSA, emphasises: “With these investments, we are strengthening our ability to offer our customers the quality, reliability and responsiveness they expect.”

Expansion of sustainable technologies in Morganton

At the Morganton site, the focus is on the production of water- and UV-based inkjet printing inks. The expansion, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026, will sustainably strengthen Siegwerk’s expertise in one of the fastest-growing technologies in the packaging industry. At the same time, new grinding and mixing plants will expand the narrow-web portfolio. A further step towards sustainability is the installation of solar panels, which are intended to partly supply on-site operations with renewable energy and feed surplus electricity into the grid.

Todd Blumsack, Head of Business Unit Narrow Web CUSA, sees the investments as a perfect balance between performance and sustainability: “Our customers expect solutions that combine efficiency with a credible approach to sustainability. It is precisely this interplay that our investments in Morganton reflect.”

Strategic importance of the region

By expanding its sites, Siegwerk is responding to the rising demand for flexible packaging solutions and environmentally friendly technologies in North America. The investments are intended not only to increase production capacity but also to create a resilient supply base over the long term. Through modernisation and sustainable approaches, the company underlines its ambition to advance both innovation and environmental responsibility.
