Speakers

Scott Fretwell

Scott Fretwell is Global Head of Segment Development for cellulosic passive fire protection for Hempel. Started work over 35 years ago for one of the UK’s largest structural engineer/steel fabricators. He has been working for global paint manufacturers for over 25 years. Sales Director for large off site shotblast and paint company within the UK. He has been dedicated to global cellulosic fire protection for more than 13 years. Additional experience with anti-corrosion systems, CPFP testing and certification and global sustainability.

Richard Fürst

Bachelor’s and Master’s studies were focused on the integral safety of buildings and construction materials with an accent on fire resistance. As a part of doctoral studies, the scientific research activities followed the field of master’s studies and have been focused on the behaviour of modern composite materials based on high-performance concrete at elevated temperatures. Furthermore, the doctoral study was directly linked to a scientific position in Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung in Berlin, which follows expertise in analysing load-bearing structures at elevated temperatures and investigations of reactive fire protection systems. Finally, the research and experimental investigation experiences were forged into participation in the standardization committees as CEN, where a new European test standard is developed.

David Garcia Martinez

In his role as Head of Innovation & Application Development, David Garcia Martinez leads Budenheim’s global technical team and laboratory for coatings applications. With more than 25 years in the industry, he combines deep technical expertise on halogen-free flame retardants with a strong understanding of market trends, ensuring that customer needs translate into practical solutions. With his outstanding industry expertise, David Garcia Martinez drives Budenheim’s commitment to continuously advancing flame-retardant technologies that are both safe and sustainable

Alexander Grahn

Alexander Grahn holds a Master of Science degree in Material Science from Uppsala University in Sweden. He has worked his entire career within the start-up and scale-up company sphere that has focused on bringing new materials to the market. Currently, he serves as an Application Specialist at Svenska Aerogel, a Swedish manufacturer of aerogel materials. In this role, Alexander provides technical support and facilitates projects involving Quartzene® aerogel, which enhances various properties of products such as paints and coatings. He believes that innovative materials will help shape the future.

Emil Lidman

Emil Lidman Olsson is a postdoctoral researcher at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), specializing in intumescent coatings. His work is focused on testing, modelling, and development of new coating formulations. He holds an MSc in Chemical Engineering from Lund University and pursued parts of his education at University of California, Berkeley. Emil carried out his PhD at DTU, focusing on phosphorus chemistry in biomass combustion. Emil held positions in industry as a catalyst specialist working with high-temperature processes, and as a process engineer involved in the designing and commissioning of biomass- and waste-fired combustion units.

Sebastian Moschel

Dr. Moschel holds a PhD in organic chemistry from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (2013). He has over 15 years of experience in specialty coatings, including corrosion protection at Atotech and flame retardant systems at Budenheim. At Clariant since 2023, he leads technical development of ingredients for intumescent and fire-protective coatings, supporting global customers in formulation design, performance optimization, and compliance with evolving regulatory requirements. His work centers on sustainable, melamine-free solutions for next-generation fire safety.

Dr. Claudia Schirp

Claudia Schirp is research scientist and deputy head of the Department for Binders and Coatings at Fraunhofer-Institute for Wood Research, WKI. After completion of her studies in in food chemistry at Technical University Braunschweig, she joined the Fraunhofer WKI in 2002 and finished her PhD in 2008. She is member of the European standardization group “wood coatings”. Her research focus is on polymerization of bio-based binders and flame-retardant wood coatings.

Dr. Arvindh Sekar

Dr. Arvindh Sekar is a polymer scientist at Empa (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology), working in the Advanced Fibers Laboratory on the design of sustainable, fire-safe, and recyclable polymer networks for coatings and composite applications.
He obtained his PhD from EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne) in 2022, where his research focused on organic and polymer semiconductors for solar-driven water splitting, providing a strong foundation in organic chemistry and polymer chemistry.
He subsequently transitioned this expertise into advanced polymer network design at Empa, where his current work centers on phosphorus-modified epoxy and acrylate systems, dynamic covalent thermosets, fire-performance engineering, and scalable sustainable materials development in close collaboration with industrial partners.
