Akzo Nobel has opened a dedicated powder coatings innovation lab at its global research and development centre in Sassenheim, the Netherlands. The new facility aims to speed up the development of next-generation powder coatings, with a particular focus on sustainability and performance. It brings together advanced testing and formulation capabilities under one roof, enabling researchers to work more efficiently across the full development cycle.

The lab is intended to serve as a hub for co-creation with customers and industry partners. By offering a space for joint development projects, Akzo Nobel seeks to respond more rapidly to market demands and tailor powder coatings solutions to specific application requirements. The facility supports work on a range of powder coatings technologies, including those designed to meet increasingly stringent environmental and regulatory standards.

Sustainable powder coatings at the centre of R&D activity

The opening of the innovation lab reflects broader trends in the coatings industry towards more sustainable formulations and reduced environmental impact. Powder coatings, which are solvent-free and generate minimal waste during application, are already considered a more environmentally friendly alternative to liquid coatings. The new facility is expected to further advance this technology by exploring novel raw materials, improved curing processes, and enhanced performance characteristics.

The Sassenheim site has long been a centre for Akzo Nobel’s global research activities. The addition of the powder coatings innovation lab reinforces the site’s role as a key location for coatings development and positions the company to address evolving customer needs in sectors ranging from architecture and automotive to industrial applications.
