PPG breaks ground on automotive coatings expansion in Ohio
PPG has begun construction on a new advanced manufacturing facility at its existing site in Delaware, Ohio. The investment of more than USD 280 million is aimed at expanding automotive coatings production capacity for North American OEMs and parts suppliers.
PPG has broken ground on a new advanced manufacturing facility at its existing site in Delaware, Ohio, as part of an investment totalling more than USD 280 million. The 100,000-square-foot facility will add water-borne basecoat and primer production, clearcoat manufacturing, real-time quality evaluation, and automated material movement. According to PPG, the new processes are designed to reduce waste while improving water and energy efficiency. Operations at the expanded facility are expected to begin in 2028.
The project is anticipated to create approximately 100 full-time jobs, supplementing PPG’s existing workforce of around 450 employees at the Delaware site. PPG stated that the investment will increase its capacity to serve automotive OEMs and parts suppliers across North America. The company had initially announced the Delaware expansion in March, and the groundbreaking marks the transition of the project into the construction phase.
Automotive coatings capacity and automation to be significantly increased
The expansion will introduce advanced automation and digital manufacturing capabilities alongside more energy-efficient production processes. Ryan Augsburger, president of the Ohio Manufacturers’ Association, commented on the development: “This is what manufacturing growth looks like when it becomes real. It is new capacity, new technology on the factory floor and another 100 people building careers in Ohio. PPG’s continued investment in Delaware says a lot about the strength of manufacturing in this state.”
The new facility adds production capacity for water-borne automotive coatings while integrating greater automation and more efficient manufacturing processes into PPG’s existing North American operations.
