20. May 2026 | OnlineCamelina oil enabling low-carbon polymer materials through sustainable sourcing – on behalf of Worlée
15.00 h CET
Content
The transition toward sustainable raw materials in polymer chemistry requires not only renewable feedstocks but also a holistic understanding of their environmental impact. This presentation focuses on Camelina oil as a promising bio-based raw material for the production of polyurethane dispersions (PUDs), highlighting its potential to replace both conventional vegetable oils and petrochemical feedstocks within these systems, thereby significantly reducing the overall carbon footprint.
A key aspect is the development of a localized and resilient supply chain for Camelina oil. Regional sourcing, combined with agricultural advantages, enables improved traceability, supply security, and overall sustainability performance.
The carbon footprint benefits of Camelina oil are quantified through specific substitution scenarios, demonstrating the achievable CO2 savings compared to established alternatives such as soybean oil and other vegetable oils. In addition, the cumulative impact of integrating Camelina-based materials into our product portfolio is assessed, illustrating the measurable contribution to reducing the overall carbon footprint of our organization.
Furthermore, a comparative analysis of product carbon footprints (PCF) for different polyurethane dispersions based on Camelina oil, soybean oil, and petrochemical feedstocks is presented. Alongside environmental metrics, key performance properties of the resulting materials are evaluated, showing that sustainability improvements can be achieved without compromising technical performance.
Overall, this work provides a comprehensive perspective on how the integration of Camelina oil into polymer systems can contribute to both environmental and technical advancements in the coatings industry.
