Empowering new talent for sustainable success
Waterborne coatings are one of the most important strategies for achieving sustainable products with low levels of volatile organic solvents. Nevertheless, the development of such systems can be a challenge due to the special nature of water as a thinner or solvent. The presentation will discuss the special requirements for raw materials and formulations for such coatings in order to achieve stable materials for defect-free coatings. In particular, the mechanisms of interaction between the components, which are responsible for success or failure, are addressed.
Why you should attend:
Get a concise overview of an important coatings topic in 90 minutes
Learn about the status quo of water-based coatings

Prof. Dr. Ray Fernando
Professor Ray Fernando has held the Arthur C. Edwards Endowed Chair in Coatings Technology and Ecology at California Polytechnic State University since 2002, where he also directs the Kenneth N. Edwards Western Coatings Technology Center. He earned his B.Sc. in Chemistry from Sri Jayewardenepura University (Sri Lanka) in 1979 and his Ph.D. in Polymers and Coatings from North Dakota State University in 1986, specializing in coating rheology.
With 15 years of industry experience, including roles as a Lead Research Scientist at Air Products and Chemicals and Program Manager at Armstrong World Industries, Ray has contributed significantly to the coatings field. He has numerous publications, patents, and has presented widely on coatings science.
Ray co-edited a book on nanotechnology applications in coatings and has served on several technical committees for the American Coatings Association and the Federation of Societies for Coatings Technology (FSCT), receiving FSCT’s President’s Award in 2005. He was also honored with Cal Poly’s Provost’s Leadership Award for Partnership in Philanthropy in 2017. In 2018, he delivered the prestigious Mattiello Lecture at the American Coatings Association Conference. His research focuses on waterborne coatings, surface chemistry, and antifouling marine coatings.
