Powder coatings technology has advanced on multiple fronts. Low-temperature cure systems enable coatings applications on plastics, MDF, and composites, supported by IR, NIR, and UV curable powders. Smart coatings with antimicrobial, self-healing, and sensor functionality are progressing rapidly from niche to mainstream applications, especially in medical, electronics, and EV segments. Globally, the adoption of bio-based resins and rapid development of smart coating platforms signal the industry’s commitment to both performance and sustainability.

There is growing focus on developing powder coating formulations that achieve thinner film thickness. Reduced film thickness translates to lower consumption and cost efficiency but also minimises carbon footprints as less product is consumed per square metre of the coated surface.

Despite technological advances, the industry continues addressing the challenge of consistently applying thin films, as powder coatings struggle to form continuous films below 30 microns due to particle size constraints and electrostatic application characteristics. R&D focus around resin-coated nano-silica flow additives to improve ultrafine powder handling while maintaining film quality is expected to bring commendable difference in film thickness.

Reducing carbon footprint by optimising the application process is another crucial area where companies in the powder coatings market are focusing. In December 2023, Akzo Nobel’s powder coatings business along with CoatingAI co-developed software using artificial intelligence to improve the process and reduce carbon footprint. The companies developed Flightpath technology to optimise equipment settings to minimise defects, overspray, and rework, saving time and energy. In February 2025, RadiiPlanet Group, a designer and manufacturer of aluminium partitions, indicated a 9 % improvement in uniform application and 6 % reduction in powder coating waste using Flightpath Pro.

The industry’s commitment to environmental stewardship has catalysed breakthrough innovations in sustainable formulations. In 2020, Sherwin-Williams launched Powdura ECO powder coatings using pre-consumer recycled plastics (rPET). In 2022, to further enhance the product footprint, the company formulated polyester resins using post-consumer rPET.

Competitive landscape

The global powder coatings market features a mix of leading multinationals and strong regional competitors. Top market participants, including Akzo Nobel, PPG, Sherwin-Williams, Axalta, Jotun, control approximately 60 % of revenues. Companies remain active in R&D, capacity expansion, digitalisation, and portfolio diversification to strengthen customer-facing sales and services analytics – to maintain and grow market presence.

Event tip: powder coatings

On 11 November 2025, the EC Conference “Powder Coatings – Low Temperature Application” (online) will focus on low-temperature powder coatings and their expanding application range. Learn how new resin technologies, UV and infrared curing, and innovative crosslinking agents enable energy-efficient processing. Ideal for anyone looking to coat heat-sensitive substrates like plastics, composites, or wood.

End applications and sustainability momentum

End-use diversification defines the powder coatings outlook. While appliances and automotive components continue to anchor global growth, construction, furniture, industrial equipment, and emerging sectors such as medical devices, electronics are fuelling new market drive.

The automotive industry’s evolution toward electrification has created specialised coating requirements. Protecting battery systems and electrical components, providing electrical insulation, corrosion resistance to extend battery life are some of the crucial requirements. Qualifying to OEM specifications around fire resistance and addressing critical safety requirements in electric vehicle applications are opening opportunities to advance powder coating formulations.

Sustainability is a strong market lever; powder coatings’ negligible VOC emissions, high transfer efficiency, and recyclability position them as the preferred technology for markets with ambitious decarbonisation and circularity objectives. Regulatory pushes in North America and Europe, alongside voluntary adoption in Asia Pacific and Latin America, advance market penetration.

Future market outlook

The powder coatings market in 2025 reflects a sector on the verge of deeper transformation, powered by its sustainability profile, technological breakthroughs, and increasingly vibrant regional and competitive dynamics. Technology innovation in low-temperature curing and specialised applications is positioning the industry for sustained growth across diverse end-use sectors.

Market evolution indicators suggest increasing penetration in electric vehicle applications, architectural specifications, and emerging geographic markets that will drive demand growth beyond current projections. Strategic imperatives for market participants encompass several critical areas that will determine competitive success in evolving market conditions. Companies must balance innovation investments with commercial viability while anticipating future regulatory requirements and market demands.

Geographic expansion into high-growth emerging markets provides access to developing industrial sectors and infrastructure projects that represent significant growth opportunities. However, successful expansion requires deep understanding of local market conditions, regulatory frameworks, and application requirements that may differ substantially from established markets. Strategic partnerships for specialised application development enable companies to access niche markets while leveraging complementary expertise and distribution capabilities.

Continuous innovation in performance-enhanced formulations addresses evolving customer requirements across diverse end-use applications. The convergence of environmental regulations, technological advancement, and expanding industrial applications creates a favourable outlook for sustained market growth, with the powder coatings industry positioned to capture increasing market share from traditional liquid coating technologies through superior performance and environmental characteristics.
