Henkel develops adhesive solutions for circular label applications
Henkel is advancing research into pressure-sensitive adhesives designed to improve label recycling processes and support compliance with regulatory frameworks such as the PPWR. The focus is on wash-off and repulpable systems, as well as technologies aimed at reducing CO₂ emissions.
Henkel Adhesive Technologies is developing innovative adhesive systems intended to improve the recyclability of labels. The aim is to help companies meet the requirements of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and design packaging that aligns with future recycling processes.
Current developments include wash-off adhesives for PET bottles that can be removed at low temperatures without leaving residues. These solutions are designed to help maintain the quality of recycled PET. In addition, Henkel is working on repulpable adhesives for paper labels, which fully dissolve during paper recycling.
Event tip: Sealants and adhesives
The EC Webinar “Composition of Reactive Sealants and Adhesives” will take place online on 28 October 2025. What makes adhesives and sealants perform reliably – and how can their properties be adjusted through formulation? This seminar provides a thorough introduction to reactive systems, covering chemical structures, functional groups and formulation techniques. Through practical formulation tips, guide recipes and patent examples, participants will gain the skills to confidently formulate and evaluate high-performance adhesives.
Research in CO₂ reduction
In addition to recyclability, research is focused on reducing CO₂ emissions. Special adhesive formulations for linerless labels are designed to eliminate the need for release liners, thereby reducing material usage and improving process efficiency. Henkel is also investigating UV-curing adhesives, which offer high energy efficiency during curing and excellent resistance to heat, chemicals and weathering.
Industry relevance
With upcoming regulatory changes and increasing sustainability demands, Henkel identifies a strong need for high-performance, circular solutions. The company’s research aims to deliver adhesive systems that meet both environmental and industrial requirements, contributing to more sustainable packaging designs.
