“This is not just an expansion” – Kansai Helios on its new powder coatings facility in Ohio
Kansai Helios is expanding its presence in North America with a new powder coatings facility in Johnstown, Ohio. The company is investing around EUR 17.2 Mio. to quadruple production capacity and strengthen supply for automotive and industrial customers in the United States. The move is part of its global growth strategy and leverages synergies with European operations. In an interview, Björn Greiff, Global Group Segment Director, discusses the site selection and the strategic importance of this investment.
What were the key reasons behind choosing Ohio?
Björn Greiff: Ohio offered a great combination of strategic advantages that made it the right choice for us. Its proximity to key customers in the automotive and general industries allows us to respond more quickly and build stronger relationships. The region also has a solid educational and industrial base, particularly in the chemical sector, which means excellent access to skilled workers. Add to that a business-friendly climate and growing infrastructure, and Ohio is clearly a place where we can grow sustaina-bly. This is not just an expansion, but a long-term commitment.
What synergies are you using between the operations in Europe and the new site?
Greiff: We are building on the strengths of our European subsidiaries to ensure a smooth and successful start in Ohio.
Our teams share product development expertise, production know-how, and market knowledge across regions. The machines and processes we use in Ohio come directly from our powder coating specialists in Ger-many, so we are confident in their quality and consistency. This is an excellent example of how global collaboration can drive local success.
How does the investment align with the broader strategy?
Greiff: This move fits perfectly with our global strategy. As a system supplier for major international customers – many of whom are based in the US – a strong local presence is essential. The Ohio location strengthens our ability to serve these customers quickly and flexibly while remaining connected to the entire Kansai Paint network. It is a strategic move that supports our growth and deepens our global presence.
Do you plan further investments?
Greiff: Right now, our focus is on establishing and scaling our Ohio operations and delivering value to our customers. Of course, we’re always looking ahead and evaluating opportunities, but we’re not ready to share any specific plans just yet. What’s clear is that North America is an important part of our journey.
