Covestro opens new TPU production facility in South China
Covestro has inaugurated its latest production site for thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) in Zhuhai, South China. With a mid-double-digit million-euro investment, the company aims to meet rising regional demand while prioritising sustainability and innovation.
Covestro has officially launched its new thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) production facility in Zhuhai, South China. The site represents a strategic milestone in the company’s growth plan for the Asia-Pacific region. With an initial annual production capacity of 30,000 t, the facility’s capacity is expected to increase to 120,000 t annually by the 2030s, making it Covestro’s largest TPU production site globally. The investment in the mid-double-digit million-euro range highlights the company’s commitment to addressing the growing demand for TPU in key industries such as automotive, IT, and footwear.
Monique Buch, Chief Commercial Officer at Covestro, emphasised the significance of the new facility, stating: “This inauguration strengthens our position in high-growth markets and enables us to better serve our customers in the Asia-Pacific region with innovative TPU solutions and enhanced responsiveness.”
Regional synergy and innovation hubs
The Zhuhai facility is complemented by Covestro’s TPU R&D centre in Changhua and the TPU application development centre in Guangzhou. These facilities create regional synergies by combining technical expertise with tailored services. Dr Andrea Maier-Richter, Head of the TPU business at Covestro, noted: “By integrating regional production with customer-focused development, we are well-positioned to drive innovation and deliver customised solutions for industries like automotive, consumer electronics, and footwear.”
Focus on sustainability and regional development
Covestro’s Zhuhai site reflects the company’s long-term commitment to sustainability and regional development. Among its initiatives is the production of TPU labelled ‘CQ’, which contains at least 25 % alternative, non-fossil-based raw materials to reduce the carbon footprint for customers. Holly Lei, President of Covestro China, highlighted the strategic importance of the investment: “Our Zhuhai site establishes Guangdong as a central hub while reinforcing our role as a reliable industry partner in China.”
The new facility underscores Covestro’s ambition to support sustainable innovation while addressing the evolving needs of its customers in dynamic markets across Asia.
