Sustainable TOCNF/HA composite films enhance gas barrier and oil resistance in packaging
Researchers introduce Tempo-oxidised cellulose nanofiber and hyaluronic acid composite films that offer high gas barrier properties, oil resistance, and sustainability for advanced packaging applications.
Growing concerns over the environmental and health impacts of non-biodegradable packaging materials have intensified the search for sustainable alternatives. This study presents a breakthrough in packaging technology with the development of composite films made from Tempo-oxidised cellulose nanofibers (TOCNF) and hyaluronic acid (HA), coordinated with calcium chloride (CaCl₂). These bio-based films offer impressive gas barrier properties, with water vapor permeability (WVP) values of 85.21 g·μm·m⁻²·day⁻¹·kPa⁻¹ and oxygen permeability (OP) values of 9.72 mL·μm·m⁻²·day⁻¹·atm⁻¹.
When transferred onto kraft paper, the coated paper achieved a 12/12 kit rating for oil resistance, effectively preventing hot oil penetration at 230 °C. Additionally, the composite films demonstrated excellent transparency, mechanical strength, and thermal stability.
