BASF expands dispersions production in India to meet growing demand in architectural paints and construction
BASF is enhancing its Mangalore site with a new dispersions production line, aiming to strengthen supply reliability and support the evolving needs of architectural paints, construction, and paper industries in India.
BASF has announced the expansion of its dispersions production capacity at its Mangalore site in India with the addition of a new production line. The expansion is designed to enhance the company’s ability to provide reliable local supply while delivering advanced, sustainable solutions tailored to customer needs.
According to the company, the investment in Mangalore reinforces its confidence in India’s economic growth, which is driven by strong demographics, rising consumption, and government initiatives aimed at infrastructure and manufacturing development. Andreas Fechtenkoetter, Senior Vice President of Dispersions Asia Pacific at BASF, commented, “The expansion of our Mangalore site will strengthen synergies across BASF’s Asia Pacific manufacturing network, ensure dependable supply, and enable us to provide innovative, cost-competitive dispersion solutions to our customers in India and the region.”
Focus on sustainability and innovation
The new production line will manufacture high-performance dispersions under BASF’s established brands, including “Acronal” for architectural coatings and “Basonal” for paper applications, to address the increasing demand for sustainable and premium solutions. For the architectural paints sector, BASF is offering advanced low-VOC and low-odour technologies that enhance stain and scuff resistance while supporting healthier indoor environments.
In the construction sector, the company’s dispersions are used to develop next-generation waterproofing systems, sealants, and floor coatings with high tensile strength and elongation. For the paper and packaging industry, solutions include high-solids binders and products with a low Product Carbon Footprint (PCF), which align with India’s sustainability goals and the growing demand for flexible packaging applications.
Milind Joshi, Business Director of Dispersions South Asia at BASF, highlighted the importance of this investment: “The new line is designed to manufacture advanced dispersions that deliver targeted performance and sustainability benefits. Acronal and Basonal technologies enable low-VOC, durable formulations across paints, construction, and paper applications, backed by reliable local production.”
Strengthening BASF’s position in the Asia Pacific region
With this expansion, the company aims to strengthen its leadership in the Indian market while enhancing collaboration across the Asia Pacific region. By leveraging its acrylic value chain and broad portfolio of performance-enhancing technologies, BASF is positioning itself as a trusted partner for industries seeking innovative and sustainable solutions.
The new capacity at the Mangalore site is a continuation of BASF’s regional growth strategy, focusing on long-term customer success and alignment with local market demands.
