Axalta Coating Systems has unveiled its 2025 “Global Automotive Colour Popularity Report”, marking the 73rd edition of this study. The report confirms that neutral colours – white, grey, and black – continue to anchor global automotive design, accounting for 74 % of all vehicles. White remains the top choice at 29 %, followed by black at 23 % and grey at 22 %. Chromatic colours like blue and red show steady interest, representing 6 % and 7 % respectively, while silver has declined to 7 %, losing ground in the global palette.

Dr. Lei Qiao, Vice President of Technology for Mobility Coatings at Axalta, noted the preference for neutrals reflects a global desire for clean and timeless design. However, the report also highlights subtle trends towards greater individuality, with finishes that offer depth and sophistication gaining traction among consumers.

Regional insights: Variations in colour preferences

The report provides a detailed analysis of regional trends, illustrating how cultural, climatic, and technological factors shape automotive colour preferences. In North America, white leads at 31 %, though chromatic colours like blue (10 %) and red (7 %) are gaining popularity, reflecting a shift towards customisation and distinctive styling. Europe favours understated designs, with grey at 26 % leading the palette, followed by white and black.

In Asia, emerging trends highlight the impact of a growing EV market. Bold hues such as yellow/gold (4 %) and green (3 %) are increasing as brands seek to differentiate themselves. Meanwhile, South America shows a preference for lighter tones, with white at 35 % and silver rising to 14 %, driven by practicality in warmer climates.

The report remains the automotive industry’s most comprehensive source of colour data, offering insights into market dynamics and consumer preferences. Axalta’s analysis of build data from leading production regions ensures that manufacturers can align their designs with contemporary trends while maintaining durability and aesthetic appeal.
