Multifunctional thermochromic coating: Colour change and protection combined
Researchers have developed an eco-friendly, superhydrophobic coating with three-stage colour transitions for diverse applications. The robust technology excels in simple fabrication, high stability, and self-cleaning properties.
A new thermochromic coating that visualises temperature changes through a three-stage colour transition has been developed by a Chinese research team. The coating integrates thermochromic microcapsules (TCMs) with nano-silica (SiO₂), fabricated using a simple spray coating method. The colour transitions from green to yellow to red cover a temperature range of 15–35 °C, closely aligning with human thermal perception.
The coating exhibits exceptional water-repellent properties, with a water contact angle (WCA) exceeding 150° and a sliding angle below 3°. After mild abrasion, the WCA increases to over 160°, highlighting its outstanding abrasion resistance. Beyond mechanical stability, the coating demonstrates durability under UV exposure, chemical corrosion, and mechanical impact, making it suitable for long-term applications.

Versatile applications and environmental benefits
Additionally, the research confirms strong liquid repellency against common liquids such as tea, cola, and milk. Its self-cleaning properties and broad substrate compatibility make the coating practical for smart surfaces, thermal warning systems, and protective industrial materials.
Notably, the coating’s fluorine-free and environmentally friendly composition, combined with straightforward fabrication methods, opens the door to wide industrial adoption. By merging colour-changing capabilities with protective functions and sustainability, this technology sets a new benchmark for multifunctional coatings.
