Siegwerk expands packaging coatings portfolio with Allinova acquisition

Siegwerk has announced the acquisition of Allinova, a Netherlands-based specialist in coatings and polymer dispersions. The company, headquartered in Hengelo, is known for its technical expertise in the formulation and production of water-based dispersions, wax emulsions and adhesives. These products will complement Siegwerk’s existing packaging coatings portfolio and further support its strategic focus on circular and digital packaging solutions.

According to the company, integrating Allinova’s technologies with its global reach will enhance its ability to deliver advanced, application-specific coatings. The acquisition also extends Siegwerk’s know-how beyond printing inks to paper and film production processes.

Strategic step in functional coatings

Founded in 2005, Allinova initially specialised in flame retardants and wax emulsions before broadening its product range over the past decade to include dispersions, repellents, crosslinkers and other speciality products. Owners Gijs Elfrink and Bob Horsthuis will remain with the company after the transaction.

The move follows the establishment of Siegwerk’s Circular Economy Coatings (CEC) business unit in April 2024, focusing on functional coatings to enable sustainable packaging innovations. The company states that the acquisition will double its global expertise in functional coatings and strengthen its position as a provider of recyclable packaging solutions.

In recent years, Siegwerk has made several strategic investments, including the 2022 acquisition of Italian flexographic ink supplier La Sorgente. These steps are designed to expand its global footprint and solidify its core packaging print business. Financial details of the Allinova deal have not been disclosed.
