Adhesives are an essential material across various industries, from automotive manufacturing to furniture production and packaging. Due to their wide application range, adhesives represent a growing market. The shift from conventional to bio-based adhesives is helping to advance a circular bioeconomy by reducing dependency on finite resources.

Fraunhofer WKI is at the forefront of researching alternative adhesive systems, including formaldehyde-free adhesives made from lignin and sugar aldehydes. The research team is also testing the potential of humic substances, by-products from the PET alternative polyethylene furanoate (PEF), as a sustainable adhesive solution. One notable development is adhesives that leverage the natural bonding forces of wood, eliminating the need for traditional chemical adhesives. These innovations are particularly relevant for the wood industry.

Reading tip: Polyurethane

Polyurethane coatings play a vital role in many applications and still offer untapped development potential. The book “Polyurethane Coatings, Adhesives, and Sealants” provides a comprehensive overview of their chemistry and applications. It covers fundamental principles for beginners and highlights current trends and developments for experts.

Advancing Sustainability in the Construction Sector

Fraunhofer WKI’s research extends to biological adhesives derived from fungal mycelium, exploring their potential in insulation material production. Additionally, bio-inspired adhesives, which mimic natural principles, are being tested for use in lightweight construction in the mobility sector. These adhesives are not only an eco-friendly alternative to conventional products but also have the potential to optimize resource use and enhance the recyclability of materials.

Certification and Training for the Adhesive Industry

As an accredited testing facility for structural adhesives, Fraunhofer WKI offers specialized training through the WKI Academy. These courses provide professionals in the field of wood construction with the knowledge needed to implement new adhesive technologies in practice.

The ongoing research and development at Fraunhofer WKI highlight the growing importance of bio-based adhesives as a key technology for sustainable industrial production and the circular economy.
