AGC Chemicals Europe initiates consultation on closure of Hillhouse facility
AGC Chemicals Europe has announced a consultation process on a proposal to cease production at its Hillhouse facility in Thornton Cleveleys, Lancashire, due to ongoing financial and operational challenges.
AGC Chemicals Europe has announced plans to consult with employees and their representatives on a proposal to cease production at its manufacturing site located in the Hillhouse Technology Enterprise Zone, Thornton Cleveleys, Lancashire. The site employs approximately 190 permanent staff and 18 agency workers, all of whom are affected by the potential closure.
The company stated that the proposal is being considered due to significant financial and operational challenges that have resulted in sustained losses over the past four years. Despite ongoing investments and efforts by its workforce, the situation has become unsustainable in what AGC Chemicals Europe described as a volatile and competitive market.
AGC Chemicals Europe emphasised that the current proposal is not final and will undergo a consultation process lasting at least 45 days. During this period, the company will work closely with unions and employee representatives to explore ways to avoid or reduce dismissals and mitigate impacts on staff. In the event the proposal is approved, production at the site is expected to cease by the end of this calendar year. The company has assured that it will comply fully with regulatory obligations, including environmental monitoring and maintaining necessary staffing for permit compliance.
