PFAS (Perfluorinated and Polyfluorinated Chemicals) are synthetic fluorine compounds that comprise a group of over 10,000 substances known for their exceptional technical properties. Characterised by stable carbon-fluorine bonds, these compounds effectively repel water, dirt and grease. Despite concerns about potential health risks, their widespread use continues because of their remarkable resistance to heat and chemicals. But change is on the horizon: Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden are pushing for an EU-wide ban on PFAS from 2026. Over the past few years, these countries have been analysing different PFASs, assessing their uses and potential risks, leading to a draft proposal for the ban.
