Event Webinar
11. Dec 2025 | OnlineEC Webinar on behalf of Perstorp: How to emulsify alkyds: “Neptem” emulsifier choice & process windows
15.00 h - 16.00 h CET
A hands-on emulsification guide for waterborne alkyds with “Neptem™”. Learn how emulsifier choice, setup, and key process parameters define the emulsification window; and why one surfactant never fits all alkyds. You’ll leave with a clear understanding of how these factors drive emulsification outcomes and coating properties, and how to align Neptem™ selection with the right process window to deliver stable alkyd emulsions with superior application performance.

Abstract
Turning solvent-borne alkyds into robust waterborne systems demands the right emulsifier chemistry and the right process. In this webinar, Perstorp shares practical guidance on the “Neptem™” emulsifier family and shows why correct emulsifier selection, emulsification setup, and process parameters are decisive for emulsifying short-, medium-, and long-oil alkyds. We cover catastrophic phase inversion (CPI) essentials; hydrodynamics (impeller geometry, mixing speed, vessel configuration); and how alkyd viscosity–temperature behaviour, acid value/degree of neutralisation, and neutralising-agent choice jointly define the CPI window and influence downstream coating properties. We also challenge the “one-size-fits-all” assumption with evidence that emulsifier choice must be matched to resin architecture. Case studies include particle-size stability (fresh and heat-aged) and coating performance (drying time, hardness, water resistance, gloss). Attendees leave with clear, actionable guidance on how emulsifier chemistry and process variables govern emulsification outcome—and how to tune them to ensure stable alkyd emulsions with suitable coating performance.
