EC Short Course | Fundamentals of Waterborne Coatings
Waterborne coatings are one of the most important strategies for achieving sustainable products with low levels of volatile organic solvents. Nevertheless, the development of such systems can be a challenge due to the special nature of water as a thinner or solvent. The presentation will discuss the special requirements for raw materials and formulations for such coatings in order to achieve stable materials for defect-free coatings. In particular, the mechanisms of interaction between the components, which are responsible for success or failure, are addressed.

Prof. Dr. Christian Schmitz
After completing his training as a coatings laboratory technician at DuPont Performance Coatings, Dr Christian Schmitz studied coatings engineering at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences. He completed his doctorate in co-operation with the University of Duisburg-Essen and the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences. Dr Schmitz currently works as a research assistant in teaching and research in the Department of Paint Chemistry for Radiation Curing Systems at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences. As part of a career path programme, he is also working on the digitalisation of coating chemistry through machine learning and high-throughput formulation.Prof. Dr. Christian Schmitz
