According to Dr. Katia Studer, Ciba (now part of BASF) plays the market introduction of new UV sources a very important role in the development of radiation curing formulations and applications. LED lamps start emerging in this market and offer a more efficient conversion of the electrical input into energy used during the curing process than mercury lamps do. After Studer this raises the issue of more energy-demanding curing of pigmented systems, where pigments interfere with the light absorption of photoinitiators. Many photoinitiators that are commercially available i.e. alpha aminoketones and bisacylphosphine oxide already provide a satisfying solution to the coatings and inks industries for curing pigmented systems under LED. Currently many R&D efforts are devoted to the design of an even more efficient photoinitiating system. In parallel, progresses in lamp technology are also required to supply the full package raw material/equipment to the coatings and inks industries that would make LED curing an industrial success. This includes, for example, the systematic integration of inerting systems to LED lamps.
