Towards mussel-like on-demand coatings

Researchers from Laboratory of Macromolecular Photochemistry and Engineering, University of Haute-Alsace in Mulhouse, France, investigated the light-triggered polymerisation of dopamine through a photoinduced pH jump.

Irradiation of quaternary ammonium salts of phenylglyoxylic acid used as photobase generators activates the release of a strong base in water followed by an important pH jump.

Result: A highly adhesive coating on steel

This initiates the polymerisation of dopamine, leading to an on-demand formation of highly adhesive coating on steel.
