Powder monocoat for automotives patented

Monday, 18 June 2012

Make automotive bodies more durable. That's the target as well for the new powder coat. But what does it comprise?

A new podercoat for automotive coatings invented Source: AkzoNobel

A new podercoat for automotive coatings invented Source: AkzoNobel

The invented powder coating composition is matte, has a fine texture and satisfies automotive industry standards for UV transmission, chemical resistance and durability.
Susan Marie Sobek and Susan Miller from AKzo Nobel Coatings International B.V. therefore used a polyester resin, a UV light stabilizer, a matting agent, and a texturing additive for the formulation.
It transmits less than about 0.1 % of UV light at 290 nm and less than about 0.5% of UV light at 400 nm.

Use on electrocoated substrates as well possible

Furthermore this invention includes methods of coating a substrate and how to cure the coating.
In some embodiments the powder coating is applied over an electrocoat. Thus, the invention also includes substrates coated with a dual-coat coating composition. In this case the dual-coat coating composition has an electrocoat between the substrate and the powder coating.
