Tutorial provides fundamentals on film formation in latex paints

Monday, 25 February 2013

What processes occur in waterborne systems during the film formation in latex paints? How certain additives affect the performance of the ultimate coating? Pre-Congress tutorial of the European Coatings CONGRESS provides the answers.

The European Coatings CONGRESS 2013 will start with eleven pre-congress tutorials, already on Sunday, 17 March. These three-hour lectures are aimed at updating participants on the major technologies employed in the coatings industry. Experts from industry and academia will familiarize attendees with the basics of the coatings technology concerned.

One pre-congress tutorial is dedicated to the film formation in latex paints. Chaired by Dr Stuart Croll, North Dakota State University, this course will provide an introduction to the physical processes occurring in waterborne systems during film formation wherein latex particles coalescence into a continuous film. The session starts by defining film formation, and how the latex particles form a stable fluid suspension, then describes how the particles come together during drying, in contrast to how films form from solventborne or reactive systems. The course will also introduce the additives necessary in waterborne latex paints and discuss how these additives and the intrinsic nature of the latex have consequences for the performance of the ultimate coating.

Numbers for each seminar are limited to 25. Pre-registration is highly recommended, as registrations will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis.
