Effective corrosion protection generally requires two or more coats of paint, each with different properties. The development of a waterborne binder system which protects metal with only a single coat is described in a new study.

The optimised binder system incorporated electronegative functional monomers to improve adhesion and was self-crosslinking. Both clear varnishes and white paint without anticorrosive pigment gave good results over a variety of metallic substrates.

Grégory Delmas, Application Group Manager at Arkema Coating Resins, France, has received the European Coatings Award 2013 for this innovative development. His paper will appear in the May issue of the EUROPEAN COATINGS JOURNAL.
