The European Commission wants to phase out the most hazardous biocides, particularly those that may cause cancer, and will introduce new rules for articles treated with the insect repellents, disinfectants and industrial chemicals, which are not covered by existing legislation. The Commission tabled a draft law aimed at coming into force 2013. According to the draft Helsinki-based European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) will authorise new biocides in a centralised approach. The move aims to simplify legislation, whilst supporting enterprises to develop safer products against harmful microorganisms. The new Regulation will replace the 1998 Directive on biocides and expands the scope of the EU law to food packaging. Products which contain hazardous substances that can cause disease or infertility will be compared and the products with the highest risk will be eliminated from the market, according to the draft law. Gain inside into novel biocide technology during the European Coatings Conference "Novel Biocide Technology IV" taking place 17/18 September 2009 in Berlin, Germany.
