Dow Corning has launched an additive that improves performance: it gives clear and pigmented paints, varnishes and printing inks good abrasion resistance, leveling and slip without excessive foaming and without affecting the gloss or clarity of the finished coating. This additive, "Dow Corning 55N", also improves hardness and recoatability in certain waterborne coating applications. Paints, varnishes and printing inks with a high coefficient of friction (CoF) are susceptible to damage both while they are being applied and throughout the lifetime of the coated part. The new additive reduces CoF without giving rise to the poor recoating properties, loss of gloss and foaming problems generally associated with reduced CoF. The product is a reactive surface-active silicone glycol with a functional carbinol group.
