Quality beneath your feet
In this technical paper recent developments in additives for use in parquet floor coatings are discussed. A siloxane has been introduced with both substrate wetting and defoaming properties, "waxalloys” and hard nanoparticles enhance scratch resistance, while a new dispersant assists in matting high solids coatings with silica. Tests on UV primers identified adhesion differences betweenwood species and some specific causes of adhesion problems. more

Small is beautiful for longer
A European consortium known as Multiprotect has developed a range of nanoparticle-based corrosion protection systems in an attempt to replace both chromate pretreatments and hard chrome coatings.Various types of coating showed enhanced salt spray resistance and in some cases self-healing properties. Some systems have been applied successfully under industrial conditions. more

Finding numbers for sparkle and shine
At present, only complex research instruments can accurately characterise the appearance of effect coatings. A new multi-angle portable spectrophotometer incorporates detectors which are out of theplane of illumination and reflection. This complex data is simplified mathematically, so that overall colour tolerance limits can be set which take into account the appearance of a coating from allangles. more
