Coatings withstand extreme conditions in harsh environments

Different generic coating types have been investigated in terms of their surface protection performance under low-temperature offshore conditions.

Experimental design, test methodologies and test facilities are described, and the results of the investigations are discussed by Dr. Andreas Momber, Muehlhan AG, Germany, in his presentation "Offshore coatings for low-temperature applications” at the European Coatings Conference "Marine Coatings” on 4/5 March 2014.

Coating systems differed in application method

Four major topics have been considered: 1. Corrosion protection performance; 2. Performance under mechanical loads; 3. Icing/de-icing performance; 4. Ageing effects. The investigations involved accelerated offshore ageing tests, rime ice formation tests, coating adhesion tests, impact resistance tests, wear tests, surface morphology tests and wettability tests. The coating systems differed in generic coating material, number of layers, dry film thickness and application method.

Suggesting a ranking of coating systems

Based on an assessment scheme, a ranking of coating systems is suggested regarding their protection performance under low-temperature offshore conditions. The investigations are part of a German, nationally funded Cluster Project "POLAR” (Production, Operation and Living in Arctic Regions).
