Today modern architectural coating systems have to fulfill a variety of different functions. First they should exhibit high aesthetical/optical value with the trend to more powerful colors. Secondly they should protect the substrate and itself against e.g. weathering or biocidal attack and show high mechanical stability while being extremely long term stable. Besides the protective character modern coating systems should also carry new functional properties. Self-cleaning, air cleaning or heat reflecting coatings are examples of functional coatings which are already successfully introduced into the market. Other functions like electro- or photo-chemical as well as magnetic effects are currently under investigation and can be used to address new applications. However consistently rising requirements as well as increased customer awareness for quality and cost are challenges on the way to the perfect paint. Dr. Christian Schaller will give an overview about trends and challenges for modern architectural coatings systems at the European Coatings Conference "Architectural coatings” on 24 and 25 April, 2012 in Berlin.
