Raising the performance of copper-phthalocyanine pigments

An upcoming paper will examine potential solutions to rheological and leaching problems that are giving automotive paint producers the blues.

Paint producers are constantly challenged to optimise formulations to meet the demands of automotive applications. Blues remain ever popular as an achromatic colour choice for cars with greens the upcoming new trend, and Lars Hoffmann of BASF will present new approaches to dispersing copper (Cu)-phthalocyaninepigments, at European Coatings’ upcoming Automotive Coatings conference in Dusseldorf on 12/13 November 2013

Cu-phthalocyanine pigments are a major class of organic pigments used in automotive coatings. However, difficulties controlling rheological properties can lead to decreased pigment loading or the need to use a pigment synergist   ̶   the latter usually has a positive effect on rheology but can bring its own problems with leaching in the final application. Colour strength, floating and flooding during the application process are further challenges encountered by paint producers and users.

Advanced polymeric dispersing agents

Hoffmann’s paper will present the use of advanced polymeric dispersing agents for solvent-based and high-solids applications. These agents are based on advanced polymerisation technologies, such as controlled free radical polymerisation which enables tailor-made polymer architectures. This high level of structural control results in high density of pigment-affinic groups and a tailored stabilising chain, lowering the chance of pigment re-agglomeration whilst improving rheology and colouristics.
