Glycidyl lets automotives look nice

Less energy and less side reactions shows a possible route to solvent-free transportation and automotive topcoats

Conventional acrylic polyols for waterborne polyurethane topcoats are usually prepared via a solution polymerisation process which is followed by some solvent removal. Thereafter, the resins are dispersed in water.

This lengthy process requires high energy levels to distil the solvent and favours side reactions negatively affecting the performance of derived coatings.

Latest automotive coating developments presented at the European Coatings Congress

Denis Heymans, Momentive Specialty Chemicals, demonstrates in the first session of the EUROPEAN COATINGS CONGRESS "Automotive coatings" on 18. March 2013 in Nuremberg, that high quality acrylic resins can be prepared in a very convenient one step process using glycidyl esters as reactive diluent.

2K PUR with higher Tg and faster hardening shows good appearance

The researchers prepared the resins with a solvent level of about 10 % with either glycidyl neodecanoate or a novel glycidyl neononanoate. The latter providing resins with a higher glass transition temperature and, therefore, coatings with a faster hardness development rate.

Furthermore, glycidyl esters reactive diluents were combined with lower molecular weight polyesters to eliminate the need for any solvent during acrylics polymerisation.
Derived 2K polyurethane clearcoats combine excellent properties such as appearance and drying speed.
