Waiting for the BPD revision

Thursday, 23 December 2010 | Posted by: Kirsten Wrede, European Coatings Journal

Currently everybody is waiting for the revision of the Biocidal Product Directive (BPD), which aims to harmonise the European market for biocidal products and their active substances. The European Commission's proposal for the improvement of the directive is currently under discussion in the European Parliament and in the Council and is said to be adopted soon.

Among the proposed amendments, the extension of the scope bo biocides in materials that might come into contact with food and the new provisions on articles or materials containing biocidal products are particularly relevant.

Bearing all this in mind, I can understand why most biocides suppliers have been very cautious about implementing new developments in the past. More often than not did I learn that new product launches had to wait until the adoption of the final regulation. It's obviously a difficult task to develop new products without knowing for sure what the definite regulation will look like in the end.

Are you confident that the final regulation will be adopted shortly? What do you think will be the outcome, and will the market afterwards be "flooded" with new biocide products? I'm very interested in your opinion!

The right balance between research and regulation will also be discussed at the European Coatings Conference "Novel biocide technology" on 12 and 13 April, 2011 in Berlin. Click here for more information:
