Troubled times for printing inks

Thursday, 5 January 2012 | Posted by: Kirsten Wrede, European Coatings Journal

The printing inks industry has undergone dramatic changes in recent years. Among the challenges facing the industry are accelerating raw material costs and supply shortages, regulation and sustainability issues. Companies are desperately trying to reduce costs and increase efficiency.

A market shift in the publications market has taken place, due to the movement towards internet and other electronic alternatives. Will digital replace printing? Will people eventually live without printed newspapers, magazinzes, brochures? I believe the future demand for printed media is unforeseeable.

In an annual review on the situation of ink manufacturers, I read that companies are still highly concerned about the tremendous increase of raw material costs and the tight supply of certain raw material classes. The overall conclusion: while the publications market is still struggling, ink manufacturers have experienced moderate growth in the packaging segment. This is especially true for trend segments like functional and sensory packaging. Challenges like product safety, smaller packaging sizes, recylability etc. need to be answered here.

But what about publications - what measurements are necessary to stop a further decline? Can further developments regarding eco-friendly and energy curing solutions contribute to a recovery? What do you think will be the future trends here?
