Trends in plastic coatings for automotives

Friday, 10 September 2010 | Posted by: Kirsten Wrede, European Coatings Journal

For decades, the use of plastic components in automotives has experienced enormous growth rates. While the outer designs of automobiles have become more and more similar, it is the interior of a car that can now distinguish one model from another. Coatings have come to play an important role in this respect. They can improve the surface of both exterior and interior parts visually, but they are also used to generate comfortable tactile properties like soft-touch, warm, matte and leather-like.

Bearing all this in mind, I started wondering what would be the state-of-the-art in this area. The number of hits on the internet and in the literature is overwhelming, but by comparison the following trends materialisd:

- current environmental regulations are driving waterbased solutions

- the requirements regarding chemical and aesthetical propeties are challenging

- the use of UV technology is growing

- direct adhesion to the surface of plastics without pretreatment is wanted

- added functionalities are being developed

What further developments are in the pipeline? From your experience, what future trends do you expect for the coating of plastic automotive parts?

By the way: coatings for plastic automotive parts will also be dealt with at the European Coatings Symposium "Modern coatings for plastics" on 29 October, 2010 in Berlin.
