Stop the trend biobased!

Friday, 19 September 2014 | Posted by: Sonja Specks, European Coatings Journal

Is it still necessary to call the development towards biobased materials any further just a trend? I don’t think so. After more than ten years a lot of new businesses and companies, which have been founded, work and deal with biobased materials. This is a proof that there already is a market – even if it is only small one.

But, why are still presentations at conferences, as for example at the European Technical Coatings Congress in Cologne three weeks ago, showing that there are huge gaps in the performance?

Shouldn’t we all look for products which are capable to match the requirements of an industry? And these products should be biobased at the same time.

Performance gaps

I listened to presentations showing that there is still much work necessary:

Either the substitution of binders regarding biobased materials for decorative coatings showed a yellowing which decreases the possibilities to use them in white wall paints. Or the usage of woodfibers for clear coatings only showed great results up to the end, where it had to be said, that no clear coating is possible as the new raw material tarnished the coating.

Waiting for the jackpot

So, I still wait for the big coating companies showing their ability to bring up a biobased coating. They still talk about their big company targets of "being sustainable” and they still talk about the trend towards biobased and renewable technologies. But after ten years I expect much more then just a trend, and at least more than words that say "let’s wait and see”. A resolute action is necessary to make this technology a promising concept for the future!
