Smart Coatings in Orlando and superhydrophobic coatings

I just came from the Smart Coatings 2011 in Orlando. Nice weather and location! It was well-attended with a number of lectures on the use of block copolymers templates, layer-by-layer deposition coatings, polymer brush grafting, novel methods for optical coatings, and new concepts for superhydrophobic surfaces.

I gave a talk on our work with superhydrophobic coatings based on colloidally templated conducting polymers. We have been able to demonstrate a contact angle change from 150 to 60 by changing the applied voltage. That is with the application of a "switch" we can go from a super non-wetting surface to a wetting surface. These films are also oleophilic - they like oils. Furthermore, we can reverse the whole thing with the use of surfactants. Such surfaces can have not only applications for self-cleaning coatings, but also for separations and membrane technologies, anti-bacterial coatings, and anti-corrosion coatings.
