Seeing and being seen

Thursday, 19 November 2015 | Posted by: Vanessa Bauersachs, European Coatings Journal

The lack of skilled labour is not only an omnipresent notion in the coatings industry but a relevant fear, especially for SMEs. With great interest, I read Gian Nauli’s report describing how the Swiss coatings federation (VSLF) tries to dissolve this problem.

The VSLF’ efforts not only include strengthening training and education but also creative measures such as a stand-up paddle competition organised to make people aware of the coatings industry and the educational options in the field.

To my mind, those seemingly "small” gestures are also very important. In addition to watching out for skilled personnel – actively looking for and training personnel and furthering education – being seen is also crucial. Especially as the coatings industry itself and the educational options within the field are unfortunately often not as well-known as many other industries.

What do you think could be done to better advertise the coatings industry? And how does your company look for skilled personnel?
