Rays of light

Thursday, 7 February 2013 | Posted by: Kirsten Wrede, European Coatings Journal

When it comes to future technologies in the paints and coatings industry, one topic may not be omitted: UV curing. But what about the less established UV LED technology? Numerous studies focus on the substitution of conventional UV lamps by UV LEDs.

The benefits are: no IR emission, low energy consumption, long service life, no use of mercury. A lot of scientific papers and presentations deal with this topic.

And still I don’t believe that UV LED lamps will replace established technologies in the near future. So far, there have only been niche applications involving the highly praised light emitting diodes. In order to give this technology a broader base, manufacturers of coatings (as well as adhesives and printing inks), suppliers of UV equipment and LEDs are required to closely coordinate their activities in this field. This could enable them to make better use of this exciting technology.

Are you already using UV LED technology? Please share your experiences and views with us.
