Rather confusing than informative: Standardised Eco-labels for paints and coatings needed

Thursday, 21 February 2013 | Posted by: Damir Gagro, European Coatings Journal

"There can be only one” – this is tagline to the movie "Highlander”. When I take eco-labels, test seals and marks into consideration, there are more than enough. The idea behind these seals is exemplary; it should evoke the feeling and convey the message: "This product is trustworthy”.

In certain cases labels are mandatory. In others, they are voluntarily attached to a product. And in these voluntary cases the number of labels is proliferating. Talking about products, it is widely appreciated by consumers to have a large variety to choose from. But with regard to labels, rather hinder the initial intention to inform. It rather confuses consumers. Some labels are only regionally or nationally recognised. If coatings producers sell their products internationally they have to adjust the labelling according to the export market. Of course, company should further be able to advertise a product from a certain region, but it should also be comparable at an international standard.

With the number of labels proliferating, there is a concern that eventually all label will fail. The large number of labels on the packaging is not helping the consumer or boosting confidence in a product. Therefore, in regard to labels, the tagline has to read "There must be only one”.
