Product safety - trend for the printing inks industry

Friday, 6 August 2010 | Posted by: Sonja Schulte, European Coatings Journal

I was talking to some experts of the printing inks industry the other day. They unanimously told me that due to the economic crisis there are hardly any technical developments going on at the moment, neither regarding raw materials nor processing technologies for printing inks. Companies are basically trying to reduce costs and increase efficiency. Among the challenges facing the industry are rising raw material prices, availability of raw materials, regulation and sustainability issues.

According to one of the experts, there is one major trend for the printing inks industry, especially when it comes to (food) packaging: product safety. Bearing in mind that packaging components like chemicals can leach into a product, brand owners are keen on putting products into the market that do not endangre users' health and safety. Searching the internet, I have come across a lot of entries emphasising this assessment. In how far do you think can the question of product safety influence the printing inks industry - what chances and risks are involved? And what develompents have already been accomplished?
