Polyurethanes: new concepts in the focus

Friday, 26 April 2013 | Posted by: Natallia Abraztsova, European Coatings Journal

The polyurethane market will benefit from the green trend, because new, modern and more sustainable materials and technologies will be used.

The green trend underlines the development of polyurethane coatings. More sustainable raw materials, alternative raw materials strategies and securing emission profiles are in the focus. The main reason is the current environmental legislation (especially REACH and VOC regulations).

According to some industry experts this trend will lead to removal of some special catalysts and additives for PUR coatings. On the other hand, the polyurethane market will benefit from this green trend, because new, modern and more sustainable materials will be used.

Let’s have a look at the research and development in this field. Sustainability, amine free technologies, environmentally friendly isocianates, waterborne polyurethanes – this topics are being discussed at coatings relevant events and conferences.

Waterborne PUR coatings as well as low-environment impact technologies are becoming more important. Waterborne systems are developing all the time. The gap between waterborne and solventborne polyurethane systems has narrowed over the years. However, waterbornes still lag behind in terms of drying time. This is a challenge to overcome. Another challenge is to develop waterborne systems that can match the high standards set by solventborne systems.
