Performance is everything- also while replacing fossilbased raw materials

Environmental regulations require further green solutions for coatings formulations, especially when it comes to VOC regulations and REACH. But is it always reasonable to replace fossilbased raw materials through bio-based ones?
It is obvious that renewable raw materials will become more popular, but from my point of view it would be difficult - and rather meaningless - to replace all kinds of fossil-based raw materials.

Due to regulations, consumers expect low VOC-solutions. But protection, a reasonable price and sustainability are still the decisive factors for customers. By choosing raw materials for a coating formulation manufacturers should bear in mind: coatings must be functional and have to have low impact on the eco-system. Today this is possible with both types, fossil- and bio-based raw materials. That’s why it is important for R&D specialists to keep a balance between green and chemical solutions.
For some applications the use of bio-based coatings is difficult to imagine, for example in the area of heavy corrosion protection. Performance is still decisive. But imagine, a chemical composition for a coating formulation based on green raw materials would be developed and the protective coating would show the same, or even better, performance characteristics – so why shouldn’t we not use such a coating?
