New packaging solutions

Thursday, 11 April 2013 | Posted by: Kirsten Wrede, European Coatings Journal

Sustainability and functionality were the dominating topics at this year’s European Coatings Show and Congress. They also apply to the packaging coating segment, with an additional emphasis on product/food safety.

So far, no detailed legislation for coatings has been implied in the EU. Specific EU legislation is in place for plastics, regenerated cellulose film, ceramics, active and intelligent materials and recycled plastics. All other materials are covered by the general safety requirements and a general obligation on good manufacturing practice set out in the framework regulation.

Until a harmonized EU legislation on food contact materials has been issued, companies involved in the packaging industry, including raw material suppliers for coatings, have to comply with the general requirements issued in the framework regulation.

Thus, companies have devoted much time and effort to develop materials that meet these demands. There are projects to replace Bisphenol A in food packaging, to develop low migration inks, renewable barriers against migrating substances, functionalised packaging with intelligent properties, renewable raw materials for environmentally friendly coatings and inks…

Some of these innovative solutions will be presented at the European Coatings Conference "Packaging and can coatings” on 11 and 12 June, 2013 in Düsseldorf, Germany. Join in and take part in the discussions!
